Black History on the PLUS Side: Earth, Wind & Fire

Every year on the unofficial holiday on September 21st, we sing the unforgettable song by the legendary band Earth, Wind & Fire. Decades later, their music still makes people get up and dance no matter what generation you are a part of. They are one of the most musically accomplished, celebrated, and commercially successful pop-funk bands.
Earth, Wind & Fire were founded in the 1970s by Maurice White in Chicago. He chose the band’s name based on his astrological sign, Sagittarius. He mixed that as a fire sign with elemental qualities: earth, wind (air), and purposely left out water. Maurice was very interested in Egyptian mythology and cosmic themes, which is why pyramids, spaceships, and futuristic visuals are featured in their concepts.
Earth, Wind & Fire blend funk, soul, R&B, jazz, and disco into the music. In addition, they were one of the first R&B/funk bands to heavily incorporate synthesizers and electronic textures. Some of their major albums include: That’s the Way of the World (1975), All ‘n All (1977), I Am (1979). Earth, Wind & Fire have won 6 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.
This band was touring globally before it was common for music groups. Through these tours, they expanded their influence and band uniqueness across South America, Europe, Japan, and so many other places. They are ultimately known for their distinct horn arrangements, positive lyricism, and high-energy live performances.

Earth, Wind & Fire laid the foundation for generations of MCs and beat makers. Their influence and legacy shine through hip-hop today in a multitude of songs that have sampled their great work. A few examples are listed below.
Feels-
“Feels” – Stylistically features “Let’s Groove” in the song by Calvin Harris featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean, which was released in 2017. “Feels” slightly slows down the original song and similarly has the instrumentals shining through the lyrics. Like the arrangement that features a beautiful blend of different elements, “Feels” presents different artists combining their talents to make a funky song that is easy to dance to. The lyrics highlight a lighthearted summer romance, “don’t be afraid to catch feels.”

Party Ain’t a Party –
“Party Ain’t a Party” – In 1997, Queen Pen released this track featuring Markell Riley, Mr. Cheeks, and Nutta Butta. The song samples Earth, Wind & Fire’s record “On Your Face” which was released in 1976, combining the iconic horn line as a recurring loop through the verses and hook. Both songs’ arrangements bring out a celebratory energy.
The memorable lyrics, “A party ain’t a party ’til it’s ran all through” speaking to a universal feeling of how a party doesn’t truly start until your friends arrive. Overall, this song’s vibe reflects one of the greatest 90s party records and is one of Queen Pen’s most popular songs.

“Guess Who Loves You More” – The song released in 2005 by Raheem DeVaughn features Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Can’t Hide Love.” The song has similar traits to the band’s unique smooth, groovy vocals, and arrangements. The song ends with roughly a minute of instrumentals. This gives the listener time to truly appreciate and identify each instrument. DeVaughn’s lyrics, “Guess who treats you better than he did” connects with listeners from diverse backgrounds who share the sentiment of devotion or reassurance in their relationships. This song helped put DeVaughn on the map because it showcased his abilities to put out a refined, well-written, and beautiful song.
